Our contemporary interpretation of the paifang, the traditional Chinese multi-roofed gateway, creates a strong identity as it welcomes guests both on foot and by car.
Our paifang design represents the water that is critical to the region’s winemaking industry, both spring water and snow melt. The gateway is an asymetrical three-tiered flowing structure which references the tiered roofs of its traditional counterpart. The silvery ‘water’ reflects light and the stream which runs alongside it. The structure is made of bamboo, light and strong, sourced locally.
The main entrance road is lined on both sides by bamboo, and the silvery paifang stands out strongly against the green.
Paifangs are characterized by multi-tiered roofs, supported by even numbers of vertical pillars which give form to odd numbers of shaped gateways, the central one of which is the main entrance. They signify a place of great importance and significance, and the materials and ornamentation used are based on the function of the place they guard.
